But how do you accept it when even if it is constructive, it scratches like a tag on a brand-new t-shirt? And everything seems to be to the point \u2013 even you can admit this, somewhere deep inside (very deep, of course). And yet, you still want to turn on passive aggression like \u201cCome on!\u201d or \u201cI didn\u2019t expect anything else from you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, constructive feedback is very useful, even if it contains not only odes about how brilliant we are, but also references to what could have been done better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with the cases where critique is especially difficult to bear. To learn to accept it appropriately, without feeling hurt, you must seriously consider the underlying reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have these tendencies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Narcissism (\u201cYou can\u2019t criticize me \u2013 I am perfect\u201d)<\/li><li>Perfectionism (\u201cEverything I do is perfect\u201d)<\/li><li>Low self-esteem (\u201cIf someone criticizes me that means I am good for nothing\u201d)<\/li><li>Hypersensitivity (\u201cSomeone criticizes me, I can\u2019t deal with it, it hurts too much\u201d)<\/li><li>Strong internal critic (\u201cI always criticize myself, and here you go \u2013 I got a confirmation!\u201d)<\/li><li>Past psychological trauma (bullying at school, a humiliation in the family)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026then you will not be able to just start calmly accepting negative feedback \u2013 it will not work for you. Relax. Critique is not an attack (if it is constructive) and you don\u2019t need to be defensive.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Separate yourself from what is being criticized.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We often take negative feedback too personally, as if we are being criticized. And this is why it hurts so much. For example, when someone criticizes the song you wrote it means only that perhaps something is wrong with the song, but not with you! It doesn\u2019t say anything about you as a composer and certainly \u2013 as a person.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Analyze whether you need to consider this criticism at all?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>To do that, turn on a filter composed of these questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do I trust this person\u2019s opinion? Why?<\/li><li>Does their opinion matter to me? Why?<\/li><li>Do they talk about something that I can control or not?<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li>And the most important thing: any criticism is just someone\u2019s personal opinion. It doesn\u2019t mean much. If we fall apart whenever someone says something negative about us \u2013 soon there will be nothing left of us. Therefore, the best approach is to take from the critical feedback things that really matter to you and throw away everything else.
